SAIT, AIT, DLT, LTO.... which one?

Hello folks, I'm looking for any information on common tape backups. My data is around 100GB, and long shelf life is very important. I've looked at company data sheets, charts, etc, and they all look good on paper - so I'm posting here, hoping to find some actual users of the products...

    network transition problems

Ok, lets make sure your mac and pc are using the same dns servers. "Cannot find the server" or similar errors generally mean dns is failing. Go to the start menu, select "run", and type "cmd" then press enter. Now type the command, "ipconfig /all" and press enter. You'll see a lot of...

Yeah, routers can be an issue. So does this problem plague any other computers at home on your network?

    network transition problems

Yes, I have a thought. Your computer is retaining invalid DNS information from one network to another. Be sure that your airport card is set on 'dhcp' (unless you like configuring these things manually). If the PC is working, find out what DNS servers it is using (usually hidden somewhere...

    copy protected cd's?

I just ran into one yesterday. It was a demo cd from a record company "for promotional use only" etc. It won't play on my computer. Or my dvd player. Or a PS2. It also won't play on my co-worker's car. Or his friends car. My hope would be that someone puts a stop to that - it really...

    Using Apple's Compressor with FCP/DVDSPro

Greetings all, I've never posted in this area before, but there's a first for everything, right? So I've got this project in Final Cut Pro, which is destined for a DVD produced from DVD Studio Pro. I was hoping to make use of Apple's Compressor.app for the final MPEG-2 DVD compression...

It's The End Of The World As We Know It

I call it too. If anything, Intel will be building the same chips we're currently using. I sure hope so anyway - Apple might not be able to survive another platform 'flip'.

    20-30 gig backup ideas

its just 30GB of data, every week. So, week 1 is 30 GB of data. Week 2 is 30 GB of data, ammounting to 60GB of total archived data. Week 3 is 30 GB of data, ammounting to 90GB of total archived data.

    20-30 gig backup ideas

Well, Thanks everyone for the information. I have to say, I've never had so many people with so many opinions and ideas on how to do this. DVD's and CDs are out of the question, for two reasons: 1) Backups have to span multiple units 2) I don't think consumer cd-r and dvd+/-r formats...

    20-30 gig backup ideas

$579 for the drive and some media isn't bad at all, compared with a new DLT system (which can easily cost over $1,000). My only question would be, how reliable are these things - its basically the inside of a hard drive, minus the heads, right?

    20-30 gig backup ideas

Well, the data has to be archived for years, which is why I didn't swing for a set of hard drives. And yeah, I can't delete previous backups. I'm looking at DLT drives at the moment, but I'm wondering what alternatives exist.

    20-30 gig backup ideas

If you had to backup 20 to 30 gigs of unique data every week to a removable format, what would it be? Has to last a long time (over 10 years, climate-controlled, of course), has to be compatible with Mac OS X (scsi, sata, or firewire connected), cart's can't cost more than $50 So, any...

    Is Linux faster than OSX?

No, I think you're quite wrong if you really think osx is in any way faster than linux. Sure, parts of the GUI on linux are faster. Parts of the osx gui are faster too. But, I wasn't comparing the GUI, as they're so completely different, there is no reason to compare them. Not to scare...

    Is Linux faster than OSX?

I have to poke my big head in here... ...and say that linux is easily 2 to 5 times faster than OS X, on the same hardware. If you've experienced things the other way around, you probably don't have linux configured well. Its easy to install the default distro of YDL, and have some...
