Is the install disc specifically for that type of machine? Most Apple install CD's/DVD's are machine specific and an install disc for a Powerbook won't (usually) work on a desktop, an iMac disc won't (usually) work on a tower, etc.

Got it working by plugging it in to one of the motherboard's USB ports. It didn't like my PCI card.

Do you just want to reformat the drive to use on your Mac, is that it?

Also try KeepVid (http://keepvid.com/). Paste the URL of the page with the movie and you get the option to save the file as an avi, or as an mpeg for your iPod or PSP. Doesn't work for all sites but easy, free and worth a try ;)
