If you open the System Profiler (Applications/Utilities) with the drive plugged in, turned on, and connected properly, what shows up in the USB (or firewire, however it's connected) section? Is it recognized at all?

com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist is the preference file for Safari's Quicktime Plugin. If it goes corrupt on you, then any time Safari tries to access QT (which is pretty much always), it crashes.

I'd recommend hanging on to your PC and controlling it remotely via Windows Remote Desktop Client. It's simple to set up, and lets you enjoy your Mac without slowdown on either system.
