I've had the EXACT same problems (except 3). That "artifact" thing happens to me even with a file name as short as "stuff.sit." I'm on a PowerMac G4 400MHz (Sawtooth) with OS 10.1.1, 512MB of RAM, and AirPort.

The only way to use a .img file to install OS X would be to burn it on a CD-R. The installation requires a start-up from a CD, after restarting. Since the .img file is on the Hard Drive, when you restart, it gets rid of the disk.

Usually, the stuff in Software Update is stuff that comes default on the Mac. Things like IE and iTunes, etc. Apple Works has to be bought, so it's not included.

I've heard from some people that using this method, they can't do some things like launch the terminal or log in as root. Have you tested for these things?

I noticed after the 10.1.1 update, when 12:00 AM comes around, instead of saying 12:00 AM it says 00:00 AM. I tried entering 12 manually in the Date & Time section of System Prefs, but that set it to PM, so I clicked to make it AM and it set it back to 00! Is there a way to fix this or is it a...
