They will be running os 9. Due to sotware compatablitiy and not having a Netinfo network set up yet. Doesn't matter what they come installed with because they will be reformatted and have a custom image put on the HD (This happens all the time in a Lab setting at a major university).

SMTP is just the protocol. sendmail is a bitch to configure, but chances are that if you have set up a SMTP server on OS X (server or otherwise) you are running sendmail already.

What shell is root using? You can find out by doing a 'nidump passwd .' in the shell. Single user mode should only be looking at the config files in /etc/ for shell config things, so I wouldn't worry about the ones in your home directory.

On further inspection, it looks like tcsh doesn't even use the PS1 variable and instead uses 'prompt'. So I have no idea why its grabing bash's prompt config.

that is the prompt string ($PS1) for BASH. Im not sure off the top of my head what \s and \v are, but \u is user, \h is host and \w is working directory. Bash would expand those ito something like user@host /tmp/foo% As for what tcsh uses? I have no idea, but you could do a "grep 'PS1'...

Simply type mail at the prompt in the terminal. This will start the unix mail program which is somewhat painfull to use. Type a '?' to get help. Also its worth noteing that when the terminal tells you that you have mail, its most likely not talking about the same type of mail that Entourage...

If you need to install with out the installer its pretty easy. I needed to because i wanted to install on a 60gb ide hd in my old biege g3 (the apple installer said it wouldn't install because it wasn't in the first 8 gig of the drive). What I did was go to the terminal and copy the .pax.gz...

Umm.. that looks like a line-out jack. What mystery is there to it? On my g/f's iPod there is only the headphone jack and the fire wire jack. No mystery ports here.

A mac beta? Cool, but I got the impression from the FAQ that a mac publc beta was not a possibility.

Quartz (not aqua) is not currently hardware accelerated (at all?). Most video cards don't support 2d acceleration of a lot of what Quartz does, or at least this is how it was explained to me. They do support 3d acceleration (OpenGL) so 3d stuff is accelerated but for now 2d in OS X is full...

Never mind, there is a link to a FAQ in the current announcement that states there will be no Mac beta. Still would be nice to have one, expecialy since it might help them find any lurking bugs in the mac version... Oh well.

Damn it. Whether or not the beta is for the mac, the registration is not. It says you need IE on Windows to sign up. The anouncement for the beta did not mention which OS's were included and since it is going to be simultaneously released for the mac and PC, I naturaly assumed the beta was...

Judging by the hype, if the iMac is the only new anouncement it will probably be one hell of an iMac. But personaly I am hopeing for a few more things to be released.

Do you get the forbidden error on your own user name? Or just other users? When I was experimenting with Apache on X I found that if I tried to access another users index.html file it would pop that error at me, but on my own it would display fine. Quite annoying. I didn't investigate far...
