    Drifting audio balance

Why in blazes does my audio balance refuse to stay put? I check the Sound Prefs every couple of days, and the balance control slider has moved enough from the center to make the output sound quite bad. Is there a key command for this that I'm hitting by mistake?

Airport + Rendezvous not working right

Yeah, I've got the latest drivers on my system. These are university access points, so I'm not sure what they have, though.

Problems with "shutdown now" under X.2.3

Oh, hmm... Maybe the lack of -h is the problem. That's the flag for "halt." See if shutdown -h now makes any difference.

Problems with "shutdown now" under X.2.3

I've heard that shutdown -h just dumps you back to single user mode on OS X. That makes sense based on what you're seeing.

    2 (hopefully) easy questions

Aw, but Amadeus isn't free! ;-) Try out SoundHack for recording and Soundapp (For OS 9) to convert. It's a little cumbersome, but it might be all you need. If not, then jump on Amadeus. Heh.

Airport + Rendezvous not working right

It seems that Rendezvous isn't quite behaving when I connect via Airport to the campus network. I can hit Command-K in the Finder and check the Local group and see the other wireless users with sharing enabled just fine. But when I try to connect to one, it times out after a couple of seconds...

Disc problems - need some help

No, if the head is seeking a block and never finds it, it's a physical disk issue, i.e. a bad block. When you hear the head knocking, does the system completely freeze dead except for allowing mouse movement? Because that's a sure sign right there.

Disc problems - need some help

Welcome to hell. I've had the same problems before. When you hear the grinding and knocking sounds of the disc trying to find a block and failing, it's almost always a bad block on the disk surface. Often, these interfere with the proper operation of fdisk, as you are experiencing. The only way...

    remote shutdown

It used to give a kernel panic on really old versions of OS X. So I guess they fixed that, right?

    Safari crashing. A LOT.

Oh, that's usually an issue with the web server setting the wrong default encoding. Safari defaults to Western script, then just cuts all the other characters when you post. Pull down View, and select a text encoding such as Unicode before you post the message. But anyway, here's a site that...

    Safari crashing. A LOT.

I'm not sure if there's a bug with the way Safari handles Japanese script, or if I've got a corrupt font. Either way, some web pages just kill Safari (repeatably) with a stack trace that points to something dealing with text width calculation. Is anybody else having this problem? Or should I...

    Totally disabling Sticky Keys?

Wait, hang on. You mean Full Keyboard Access in the Keyboard Preferences? That's fully independent from Allow Universal Access Shortcuts in the Universal Access Preferences.

Quicktime uses old version of Flash

Yeah, it worked fine for me. Now Safari sends Flash movies to the real Flash player, rather than the Quicktime Plugin.

Quicktime uses old version of Flash

Ooh, that's neat. Post editing is disabled, so I can't fix the xml tags in the quote block that were completely blown away. Just search for that MIME type, and change WebPluginTypeEnabled to false.

Quicktime uses old version of Flash

Okay, that file was the key. It has the MIME types that the plugin is supposed to handle. So just edit the file to disable Flash handling in the Quicktime Plugin, and all is well. <key>application/x-shockwave-flash</key> <dict> <key>WebPluginExtensions</key> <array>...

Quicktime uses old version of Flash

Well, I'm trying to use the Flash 6 Player plugin, but when the Quicktime Plugin is present, it insists on handling Flash movies instead, so anything requiring Flash 6 won't work. The only solution I've found it to remove the Quicktime Plugin, but then embedded Quicktime movies don't work. Argh.

Quicktime uses old version of Flash

I'm just trying to view some web pages with embedded Flash. These Flash movies seem to be coded so that they absolutely require Flash 6, because when the Quicktime Plugin tries to handle them, it just displays a broken Quicktime movie icon. When opened with Quicktime Player, it complains that...

Quicktime uses old version of Flash

This is driving me insane. When Quicktime tries to handle a Flash movie, it uses an old 5.0.something version of Flash player, despite having installed the latest version (6.0.whatever.) I had to remove the Quicktime Plugin from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ because any time Safari tried loading...

Safari 1.0 doesn't support latest version of Flash

This is just weird. I deleted the old one, reinstalled, and the Installed Plug-ins list shows the proper version number. The About page at Macromedia still shows version 5.0.30, and Flash animations requiring version 6 display only a broken Quicktime icon. Is Quicktime trying to handle Flash and...
