    IMPORTANT Classic Issue For All

What is this "9" of which you speak? Has Apple released 10.2.9 already??? Where can I D/L it??? :D Seriously, that's good to know. I don't boot to 9 at all any more, but I'll be sure to 'slap' it with classic before startup if I ever find the need to again (I doubt it).

    Network Interface mode

Promiscuous mode is a highly specialized mode at the hardware level. Typically, it's only turned on by applications that need it. I've found a few, but they only do so in order to function correctly: Ethereal - is a network packet analyser, available through fink. It allows you to capture all...

Problem with display when starting OSX

Couple of ideas here... First, could you have the White on Black accessability option turned on? Check in System Preferences... Universal Access... Second, in System Preferences.. Displays.. color, do you have a custom profile set? If so, try one of the generic profiles.. like Generic...

    Cool Stuff for your Mac

The colour covers for the PB look interesting, but the description is very strange: Streetcar?? WTF? :D

    .htacces

The definition for the directory in htttpd.conf also needs to have a directive AllowOverride defined. For example, my wiki server has the following directive in httpd.conf: <Directory "/htdocs/wiki/bin"> Options +ExecCGI AllowOverride All...

/etc/hosts: Can I bind my dynamic DNS hostname to 127.0.0.1/localhost?

Or (riffing on that other thread), you could use amras.no-ip.local. and not have to modify any configs at all...

    Trailing "." on local hostname?

In DNS-speak '.' has a special meaning. It means 'root domain'. Implicit to all DNS queries is the trailing dot. Even though you don't typically see it, a DNS query for this site would actually be 'www.macosx.com.' meaning that there are no higher authorities beyond the root name servers that...

    How much is enough?

Agreed. Get as much memory as you can possibly afford. You'll be happy that you did.

Time to stir up the pot - DRM

I agree with hulk, fryke, and dixon here... DRM would be a fatal mistake on Apple's part. I just sold my old(er) iBook to a friend of mine. He's what I would call a proto-switcher. He's not jumping in headlong - definitely interested in Macintosh - but not quite ready yet to dump his PC. One...

My refrigerator keeps my computer up!

Maybe a stupid question, but do you have a surge-protector or even a UPS for the computer? I had the same problem with an iMac that was connected to my stereo reciever in the the living room. Every time I would turn on the reciever, the iMac would wake up. It was kind of convenient in a way, but...

    Alternative to Virtual PC??

It looks to me that Wintel is based heavily on Bochs. I've played with Bochs vs. VPC, and Bochs is much slower than VPC. IRRC, VPC uses a good deal of Altivec optimizations, whereas Bochs does not (at least the last time I looked).

    Pismo Power Manager

Actually, it's quite likely that the 10.2.4 update has broken the PMU... See this thread for some of the gory details. The short version is that the 10.2.4 update included a patch to the PMU that's causing all kinds of grief among 'book owners. The good news is that a software fix can fix...

10.2.4 killing iBook / PowerBook battery

I think the PMU is responsible for managing the battery's state. From what I can gather, it's exactly as you say - the upgrade hoses up the battery. But, I think it's the upgrade process itself. The second battery I had for the iBook (I'm selling the iBook) has been fine with 10.2.4 on the...

    X11 Forwarding Solaris Desktop

There's no need to really. Just export the display back to yourself (running X11, naturally) and run whatever you want into the quartz-wm... ...or do you really like CDE that much? ;)

Apple is losing the CPU battle

Well put, Langley... I got a few jeers the when PC folks learnt that my TiBook is 'just' 800MHz, but when they learn that it's a proper Unix machine, running all the standard Linux-type stuff (Gimp, OpenOffice, nmap, ethereal, vi, etc), all mainline Mac apps, including MS Office, and, by the...

    iBook battery 56 % charge drops suddenly to 0 % !!!

Sounds like the dreaded 10.2.4 update battery death to me. That's exactly what happened to my iBook when I updated to 10.2.4. See this thread for my longer explaination of what I think is going on. You might want to get a copy of XBattery to query the capacity of the battery. I've got 2...

    War and Religion

Funny, I had to go back to re-read your original question, Ed... The threads do take on a life of their own, don't they... :) There were, as I read it (correct me if I'm wrong here, Ed), 2 questions/ideas that started this all off - 1. Reconciling personal religious belief and war, and 2...
