OS X Server is some wicked kit!

I've just been reading about the Isle of Man Education department in the latest UK MacWorld. They have a network of 1200 Macs linking up all the schools on the island. We're talking about iBooks, iMacs, Airport networking, etc... Each student can log on anywhere in the island and be able to...

Don't you hate it when DNS is down?

My ISP (BT) quite often have DNS failures that stop me surfing the web or reading my mail. This can be a common cause of pages you know are there but fail to load. An easy way to get around this is to make yourself a hosts file with the ip addresses of your favourite web sites. To get the...

    UINX question

I must admit that I don't have OS X installed a the moment (cleaning up for 10.1) so I can't verify this, but in other unix flavours you can do 'man intro' to get a synopsis of many of the available commands. Or, for X (BSD) specific commands check out http://www.bsd.org/unixcmds.html

    FTP, help!

The man page is helpful: If the user name appears in the file /etc/ftpchroot the session's root will be changed to the user's login directory by chroot. ie: will only be able to see from their directory down.

    Defrag ?!

The Unix Filesystem (UFS) was not designed to be defraged. It is optimised for speed. Apple should really provide some sort of tool for at least defraging HFS+. Aren't there problems when accessing UFS mounts from OS 9??

    MacGimp

Wasn't it originally designed to display a clock (xclock) on a computer screen? Also speaking to a friend of mine (Linux geek) the X layer will be redundant as soon as the KDE (and Qt) developers can get their window manager to talk directly to the graphics device. The only reason it may be...

    Memory problems

On my G4 powerbook I've got 512MB RAM. At boot, with only the Finder and a memory useage app GMEM running in the dock, the reported memory usage is 109MB. If I run some programmes like Sound Studio or Photoshop that can really push the memory usage up to around 390MB. Now if I quit all apps...

Authenticate by LDAP or NT Domain?

I think the / can go either way. Also, I think you need to have a computer account on the domain controller as well as a user account.

When are they going get off their arse and produce a quartz version so we don't need to waste time with this ancient X11 stuff?

    Toast Titanium

I've got the 4x4x8 version. It's both USB and firewire. I use the firewire so I don't need to plug it into the mains. It works well under toast titanium for OS X. The only bug I've found is that it won't erase cd-rw disks.

UNIX command line: where can I learn???

For Mac OS X get a unix book that covers BSD unix commands. The more popular flavours these days are SVR4 (System 5 Release 4) unix (eg: solaris et al.) The commands usually have the same name across BSD and SVR4, but the options are often different: eg: Mac OS X: ps -aux Solaris...

    Filesharing with Windows?

I tried sharity at work (nt server 4). I found that after a while I saw these .DStore files littered about the shares on the file server. I also found that sharity seemed to ignore permissions on shares etc and I could go in to folders my account usually coud not access. Anyone know how to stop...

Let's see how much RAM helps out OS X

My PB has been upgraded from 256MB to 512MB. While I did see a difference, it wasn't all that much faster. I've noticed that only one 80MB swap file is used. I can't help but think that X would be faster if the PB had more video RAM. 8MB is fairly crap.

OS X on a Sun blade 100 desktop

For m64 cards: m64config For ffb's : ffbconfig The syntax is the same, ie: To show available resolutions ffbconfig -res \? ffbconfig -res 1280x1024x76 try to try for 10 seconds (run in text mode!!) As always read the man pages... Sorry if this a little off the topic!

    Open Office

I've used the windows version of open office (beta) at work. I'm happy to say that now each programme seperate and there is no 'start' menu like star office. It's quite good, but even though you can save in MS format if you want, you loose some formatting if you open, change and re-save an MS...

    root perms and performance issues

In unix, 'root' is just the user with a UID of 0 (zero). So all you need to do is change your UID to 0. I assume this would be done somewhere within Netinfo. However, the first thing you learn about unix security is restricting root access. Thwart the inherent security features of unix at your...

    Dual Boot

You could boot to the OBP (Open Boot Prom) by holding down CMD-OPTION-O-B (i think). Then use setenv auto-boot? false to stop the OS from booting, set two device aliases, then when you boot you go to a prompt and can type: boot classic or boot x or boot cdrom This said, the option...
