I've always thought it's better to wait for the second incarnation of any Apple product. By then, any obvious bugs or problems should have hopefully been ironed out, in addition to the faster speeds and other candies.

If you turn file sharing on under System Preferences, it will list an FTP address to use in which to access your account files. I think this is what you mean. Although this lists it within Tiger, should be pretty much the same in Panther: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/security/
