Whats wrong with my short C++ thing?

Am I the only one who uses short or char to conserve memory when the only variable you're entering is one character?

    Triggering display/HD/system sleep manually?

Is there any way to trigger sleep manually, either by calling a system function or a Darwin command? I'm interested in forcing system display, and HD sleep--independantly--at any given moment from user input, without waiting for the preset time to elapse. Cheers!

    How long since Install? (Uptime?)

Check the file creation date of some system files or folders like /Users/Shared which are created at system installation and not modified or replaced by Software Update. drwxrwxrwt 4 root wheel 92 May 6 12:16 SharedLooks right to me :p

    Toast 5 burning problem

I agree with zerorex, but if you can successfully mount the image to your desktop, try running NDD on that volume and see if it comes up with anything.

    Connecting to a Windows printer

I had my Mac's Epson Colour 777i shared with DAVE 3.1 to my XP machine. When I printed something from XP it would print, and then print an infinate amount of copies. The only way I found to stop it was to sudo rm "Dave Spool Folder" heh. Not even restarting (anything: printer, iMac, XP) fixed it!

    Qtss

Did you try sudo kill [pid] Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember MP3Broadcast being a process of QTSS? Do you have any other media servers on your computer? I installed QTSS on my first iMac, but when I reformatted I killed it because it was kinda useless not being able to...

    Accounts 1.2, worth registering?

I've just downloaded Accounts 1.2 (http://www.nano.com.au/) from my iDisk Software folder. It looks pretty nice on the outside, I've used it off the mounted image for day or so. I know it's not Quicken (I don't like Quicken much), but what have you found in this software? Does it look like...

    Speech Recognition

I concur with evildan, speech recognition for dictation is far more complicated that parametrically analyzing someone's voice and trying to match it to a command, since there is a limited number of commands and the names vary rather strongly. Dictation requires much stronger analyzation...

    Finder Error codes?

When I try to copy some files or folders to back them up to my USB stick, I get Error -50. What is this error? More importantly, where can I find a list of OS error codes, because apple help in the OS is useless. I can't even get a complete list of startup keyboard command combinations...and...

iDISK is hella fast in 10.1.5

iDisk is good for free web hosting, but I still prefer my USB stick for file sharing.

iDISK is hella fast in 10.1.5

I just tried my iDisk, and it is HELLA fast. It looks to me, though, that the OS is caching folder views, and then just checking the folder modification date to see whether it needs to be updated. There's no way it can list all the applications in the software folder in under one second :p

    Disk Image Backup Application?

I don't use that feature, but I think Retrospect (bundled with Norton SystemWorks) might do that?

Blue Screen, Spinning Cursor at shutdown

I've got a 700MHz G4 with 768 RAM, and sometimes when I log out from GUI, shut down, or log out from ">console" it gives me the beach ball and blue screen for as long as 3-5 minutes. If you wait a while it might go away, mine works perfectly well. How long do you wait before hitting the power?

    industrial strength UNIX - Flaw??

I would assume that since the application (like Word X) is still using CPU power that it's still requesting memory--God only knows what it's doing when it's hidden...tree falls in the forest. And yeah, 768 RAM is fun :) But I've got to say that the 2GB on my 2.1GHz I've got on this XP...

    Speech Recognition

I used speech recognition in OS 9 ALL the time. It was awesome, I could command it from anywhere in my rather small office to do just about anything. I called it "Tiffany"; if you have another name set, or you have it configured to use [ESCAPE], replace as necessary. 1. You can either buy a...

Do hidden windows still process graphics for the display?

Cool that's pretty much what I assumed. Thanks!
