try this in the terminal: sudo chmod 700 /applications then type your password. BTW, i'm not UNIX genius, so you might want to aska round some more if it doesn't work.

I belive target disk mode works under any circumstqance since it is part of the firmware. Just a guess, but it does work with either system installed.
