    Joliet CDs work!!

Guys, I can't believe this, but it seems Joliet CDs (that is CDs burnt with windows long filenames) work on MacOS X flawlessly. If you tried to read them on MacOS 9, all that you'd get was names like THISSUC~1.KSA, while the file names in MacOS X are nice long 255 character ones! Yay, Mac...

downloaded Darwin for the compiler Cheat

I tried out the Darwin solution myself and it works nice. Of course, I'll switch to official tools once they come out..

    slow-motion minimize

Not the most useful feature, but if you want to see your window minimize in slow motion, hold shift while clicking on the minimize button. When you click on the window in the tray and hold shift, it works too.

    developer tools

Also, the plain console developer tools like cc, make & stuff can be installed by downloading the Darwin image from apple's site and then applying the macaddict patch (www.macaddict.com).

    Connecting to windows shares...

You could mount through DAVE in classic (I didn't check this, but it works for AppleShare). Samba and other stuff will not be supported until the dev tools come out in mid-October, since there is no safe way to compile them... Someone (me) might do the port using the publicly available...

    longer file names?

Allright, these are filesystems installed on Mac OS X Beta: AppleShare (not working too well) cd9660.fs cddafs.fs (not too great-- audio CD) hfs.fs udf.fs ufs.fs ... I am sure Joliet and other stuff are going to be supported as soon as Apple's Dev. tools in October are out.

    MacOS X Speed

Man, I don't know about live window dragging:: do you have enough RAM? what's the problem? Live window dragging is really really fast on my iMac rev.A/233 (96 MB RAM).. Application launching used to suck, but since I opened more free disk space, it's much better. It still is slow. Yeah...

    9600 Upgrade

awesome! I'm writing that down, it's supposed to be impossible. I heard it's machine dependent. 9600s are 604 machines which are architecturally closest to G3s so I guess that's why it worked. Cool!

    Clarus the Dogcow

I think it's waiting in stockyards until October (when the developer stuff gets out)... I hope it doesn't go 0xDEADF00D :-)

    Success: iMac rev.A/233,96MB RAM

I checked the memory occupation and kernel takes abour 16 megs, desktop takes about 16 megs and carbon app loader (LaunchCFMApp) takes around 30 megs of RAM... So, your hard drive will turn into a toast from all the VM accesses :-) Better upgrade your Mac soon.

    millions of colors looks bad

Mine 32-bit color works. Try reporting that to Apple and send them your config, too.

    OsX crashes during install!!! Help...

Make sure your ATA CD-ROM from which you are doing the install is not slave. it has to be master. your HDD has to be master AND the partition you are installing it on should have logical sector 0 (the first partition on the drive). Yup, that means copying your first partition on your Maxtor to...

Mac OS X CD not appearing on the desktop

I had similar problems. Try putting the CD in and then closing the CD-ROM suddenly. Also, try making sure your CD is really clean. If everything fails, go to a friend who has a CD-burner and make a fresh copy for yourself, that should work.

    Install on 9600 Newer G3/400

Watch it before you try to install on systems with upgrade cards. The upgrade card manufacterers (Newer, etc.) said that for now OS X won't work on their systems, but they are working on it. Apple explicitly warned that models upgraded to G3/G4 do not (so far) work with OS X. The reason...

    Install Errors-Please Help

Maybe you have one of those sensitive CD-ROM readers like I do. What I did was make sure my MacOS X Beta CD is very clean, because that screwed me up on some other OS installs (when I was installing OS9).. Also: • make sure you are installing OS X on your first partition. • make sure your...

    Audio in OS X

IT's a bit quirky. I don't think that's very stable now. I have problems even with standard audio out (you have to play some sound on internal speakers before turning external speakers on).

    MacOS X Screen Saver?!

Yep, it's true. It has a screensaver. It's not very powerful, though. It draws an Apple logo and writes out your computer's name. Yes, that's it. Also there is no password-protection. But there are possibilities for adding Scr eenSaver modules, which is good.

    Classic enhancements (request for feedback)

QT is kind of slow -- Sorenson decoding is bad (slow). Stuff under classic runs cca. 13% slower (my benchmarks). Async device drivers for CD and HDD are awesome: the stuff from CD is loading and you get to click on menus and move windows..crazy.. SCSI people are going to be happy. Network...
