Here is a step-by-step guide on how to take apart a G4 iBook - should also apply to G3s: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/83.14.1.html Hope this helps. patrice http://www.patriceschneider.com/apple-osx/blog/

I need to temporarily transfer everything to a laptop...

Qion's suggestion reminds me of another Apple OS X-integrated tool: the Migration Assistant. Format the harddrive on the PowerBook, re-install OS X (make sure you have the correct version at hand), after that is done restart, then hook the G5 up in Target Disk mode, and let the Migration...

I need to temporarily transfer everything to a laptop...

Carbon Copy Cloner (freeware) as well as Super Duper (demo version works perfectly well, with some limitations only) both should do the trick. I used Carbon Copy Cloner three times on a cutomer's machine (transferring *all* his PowerBook G4 data - including OS X, all user data, etc. - to an...

    Screen Spanning Doctor problems?

It is recommended that you repair disk permissions before *and* after installing new software. And yes, you can do it running Disk Utility. patrice http://www.patriceschneider.com/apple-osx/blog/

Powerbook won't boot after 10.4.6 update

Even though it should theoretically work without any glitches, I would personally *not* recommend updating your OS X through the Software Update window. I would rather download the COMBO installer from the Apple site, and apply that updater, since it seems to be the most reliable one...

    can't install 10.4.6 update

if memory serves right (i'm not 100 % sure, i have to admit), the "error starting disk utility background process" comes from the itunes package receipt (!), which you can find here: --> harddrive (on which os x is installed) --> library --> receipts; the file is called "itunes.pkg". put it...

    ibook g3 freezing

have to agree with ra3ndy - the flickering screen is the known logic board issue. not sure, though, whether you are still entitled to a free logic board replacement. (check the apple.com site for info.) depending on where you are in the world (or even which city or state in the us), some...

    battery fading inevitable?

Thanks for all the info here! A friend told me that he did some research on the subject last year, and that apparently your battery will have a longer lifespan if you *take the battery out* while you are hooked up to the AC! I've been doing this for a while now - but of course I do not have a...

    MacBook

i would personally say that is an impossible one to answer, dear lennonabbeyroad... chances are you might find some shops desperate to get rid of their powerbook g4 stock - so they'd drop their prices... on the other hand you can see phenomenons like the iPod mini - which sold for a *higher...

    MacBook

I personally never ever buy first generation machines - they often have some technical problems that will later be resolved. (And sometimes not!) Many people say that it depends extremely on what applications you mainly use on whether you should wait for them to be available optimized for the...

New Powerbook Battery Maxes at 94%

You can re-calibrate your battery by running your laptop on it until it is "totally" empty (the PowerBook will then go into Sleep Mode automatically). Afterwards it should work okay again - and show the full 100 %. There is also an article over in the Apple.com Knowledge Database that...

Post a pic of your mac setup!

to "Lt Major Burns": wow - just how do you keep your space so tidy? (Or did you just tidy it up for the photo shoot? ;-)) I envy you... I wish my space looked the same... I'll send an updated pic soon - because I added more stuff to my workspace (rather than getting rid of all the...

not able to repair permissions -- what?!?

sourcehound: are you 100 % positive about this: "ironically, it's because the permissions of Disk Utility itself need to be repaired."? if memory serves right, even trying to repair permissions in Single User mode using applejack would not work as long as i had iTunes 6.0.2 installed...

    itunes rant...

If you are running your iTunes from an external USB drive, I can imagine it might be a bit slow... A friend has his iTunes Library on an external FireWire drive and does not have the problems you described. iPhoto can be frustrating, yes. More RAM would help - but another solution is: upgrade...

problems importing mailboxes, mail, and addressbook

bestrobots: Cannot give you instructions re the Mail App problem - have not had to do this myself yet. I do know, however, that on OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Apple changed the format of the mailboxes (so that Spotlight can index them). Thunderbird is able to still work with the format of the mailboxes...
