did you try increase the tcp-buffer on your linux system? that's what makes it's blazing fast on osx.. so the default buffer sizes are the problem maybe, and then maybe it is some mis-calculation in the samba settup i don't know

are you using 'shared printing' ? at my work, i never had to install anything for neither of the 4 printers available. they're just hooked-up to the network, either directly or through a computer (mac) and i can print with all 4 just like that..
