    ical alert stuck "off screen"

Thanks for the comments about my site. :) I misread your last post about checking the preference files for coords. If they aren't in there, I can't think of any way that we can stop this from happening. When I upgraded to 10.4.8, I did it via the combo update, NOT software update. I was going...

    ical alert stuck "off screen"

Moving com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist to the Desktop doesn't help either.

    ical alert stuck "off screen"

Well, that's weird. It's EXACTLY what I am seeing on my iBook. I think it started after the upgrade to 10.4.8 last week. It's really annoying. My looks exactly like yours, in the same position on the screen. Anyone know what's causing this, or, at least, how to correct it? Moving it does...

System will stop completely on its own

It's on a different disc that shipped with my iBook. It's labeled "Apple Hardware Test". You need to insert the disc, reboot, and hold down the 'C' key when you hear the chime. It will boot into the disc and allow you to run the utility.

    Mac OS 10.3.9 finder/dock unresponsive

Are you able to create a new user account? Can you test the new account and see if this problem is present there too? You will need to launch System Preferences in order to create the new account. Since you say you can't launch anything but Firefox, you may not be able to. Can you get to...

System will stop completely on its own

It's likely not a virus, since it would be the first on our platform. It might not be a known problem, or it might. Someone else may have seen it. Could definitely be a hardware issue. Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test from the OS X CD/DVD?

    iphoto 6 uninstallation.

The simplest way that I can think of would be to uninstall iPhoto 6, and then re-install iPhoto 5. Before you uninstall anything, move your iPhoto library to another location, and drag the folders (full of your pictures) into iPhoto 5 once it has been installed. It will import your photos. I'm...

    iPhoto won't open

Have you tried trashing the iPhoto preferences file? ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist You can move it to your Desktop if you want to keep it, but, if it's the problem, you don't want to restore it anyway. Don't trash it until you move it to the Desktop, launch iPhoto, and see if...

Error when trying to connect to a PC

What is the OS version on the Windows PC? If XP, have you tried turning Simple File Sharing off, creating a new share, and mounting that on your Mac? Error code -36 is an I/O error, according the Apple Web site. Someone else might have more experience with this error, however. If you are...

    Automator - workflow help

The problem with this is that you are trying to pull information from a Web page, rather than a database or some kind of delimited file. In Automator, this is not possible out of the box.

iChat: Video Chat with someone who does not have iSight?

I just tested things with my friend, and, using the configuration above on my own machine, he was able to initiate a video chat with me.

iChat: Video Chat with someone who does not have iSight?

Looks like it should be something like this... 1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. 2. From the View, choose Sharing. 3. Click the Firewall tab. 4. Click New. 5. Enter the following values... -- Port Name: Other -- TCP Port Number(s): 5190, 5298, 5220, 5222 -- UDP Port Number(s)...

iChat: Video Chat with someone who does not have iSight?

Nevermind...found it in the notes section of the same article... "1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220 and 5222, which need to be open for TCP only."

iChat: Video Chat with someone who does not have iSight?

Thanks for the info... Regarding the instructions below for opening ports in the Apple firewall, are they TCP ports, or UDP ports, or should the ports be entered into the fields for both TCP AND UDP? 1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. 2. From the View, choose Sharing. 3. Click...

    Can Apple get a Virus?

Also, the flat blade you need is a plastic (not metal) putty knife. They are found in most hardware stores for a dollar or less. If you are still under warranty, though, don't bother with it. Just take it in and let Apple deal with the repair.

    Can Apple get a Virus?

Your comment is true, and I can certainly understand where you are coming from, coming from a typical do-it-yourself PC background myself, however, there are tradeoffs with certain hardware that I was willing to make. For example, if you want to be able to replace parts in your Mac, easily...

iChat: Video Chat with someone who does not have iSight?

I turned off my firewall. That did it. He was able to video chat with me. However, is there a way that I can keep the firewall on, while allowing traffic on ports that are used for video chatting by iChat? If so, what are the port numbers? And, will opening these ports open me up to anything...

It was the firewall. Mine was on, his was off. I turned mine off, and then video chat worked.

    iChat video problem

A friend of mine is having the same issue. He has an iSight, and I don't. When he tries to initiate a video chat with me, he gets the same result. BobW suggested trying to initiate a video chat with the Apple test user: appleu3test01 I am waiting to see if he says this works or not. Try it and...

    Imac operating system

Did the Mac that you bought not come with an installation disc? If that is the case, you can probably buy one of the earlier releases (OS X 10.3 Panther, for example) of the Mac OS. Check out eBay. You are looking for a retail copy of the operating system, not a copy that came packaged with a...
