Let's see how much RAM helps out OS X

I have 256M in my Rev C. iMac (266Mhz). It maxes out at 384M, but it's a PIA to add RAM and I'm not convinced I'd notice any difference with only another 128M. I was toying with giving it to my sister and buying a cube, but I guess that's not gonna happen. Not sure what I'll do now. Mike

    AppleWorks 6.2 update

Is there any way to install AppleWorks 6.2 for MacOS X WITHOUT first installing the "classic" environment? I've gotten by thus far without it, and I'd like to keep it that way. Alternatively, any guesses when Apple will release a MacOS-X specific version of AppleWorks? Thanks, Mike

Let's see how much RAM helps out OS X

I noticed a pretty big gain from 160M to 256M in my Rev C. iMac. I still get the occasional "not enough memory to load image" errors from IE 5.1, but I think that's an IE 5.1 problem, not MacOS X. Mike

    No-classic spreadsheet?

Nope, DSL is no more (can't get it in my new apartment). I see you do have Classic INSTALLED. My impression is that this is required to install AppleWorks 6.x. Is this not the case? I don't have anything but MacOS X on this box, and I'd prefer to keep it that way. If I can install...

    No-classic spreadsheet?

I saw Mesa. It's a commercial product -- sounds expensive, but haven't actually looked. I thought AppleWorks 6 required MacOS 9 / Classic? If you're absolutely sure it will work fine on a MacOS X-only box, I'll go ahead and buy it. Mike

    No-classic spreadsheet?

I've managed to avoid installing the "classic" (MacOS 9.1) environment so far, and I'd like to keep it that way. Are there ANY spreadsheet programs (text-based Unix apps OK) available for a MacOS X-only machine? Thanks, Mike

    iMac internal modem?

I re-installed MacOS X from scratch, and the modem has been working perfectly. I'm _slowly_ going through the update process to get back to where I was (10.0.3?). Unfortunately, I'm only connecting at 24K or 26.4K -vs- the 640K DSL I've grown accustomed to. Bummer. Mike P.S...

Cannot connect to ISP from X

I have a Rev-C iMac I recently upgraded to 256M. I never tried the modem in my previous 160M configuration. It is currently pretty much ignoring the modem -- won't actually "connect" or try to dial, won't "disconnect" when I hit cancel. What are my options? I hate to think it's...

    iMac internal modem?

Are there any known-issues or "gotcha's" with the Rev-C iMac internal modem and MacOS X? I tried for quite a while last night to establish an Internet connetion. It just sits there, saying it's "establishing a PPP connection", but it never even tries to dial. Clicking "cancel" gives it a...

    RAM is good

Upgrade my Rev C. iMac from 160M to 256M yesterday. So far it "feels" MUCH better. Well worth the $40. Mike

    nice(1) screen saver?

Actually, it's on a LAN with my Linux boxes & Windows 2000 boxes. I've installed X11 and do use it some remotely. The most annoying thing is that it's so busy "thinking" about the screen saver, it takes FOREVER (or at least a couple seconds) to realize I want to do something and quit with...

    nice(1) screen saver?

This really isn't about renice. It's about limiting the amount of CPU the screensaver uses (by any means). Once again, is there any way to have the pretty screensaver and still have the machine be usable? Perhaps start the parent process with a little nice(1)er value? Or maybe something...

    nice(1) screen saver?

renice(8) is there. I'll assume for the moment that it works. The problem is that ScreenSaver is a unique PID every time it starts. There's no setting, or something I can "click" on? Mike

    nice(1) screen saver?

Is there a way to make the Beach or Forest screen saver a little nice(1)er? I like it, but it pulls WAY too much CPU on my poor little iMac. Thanks, Mike
