    Return from Hiatus

Heh, it definitely wasn't the off-topic posts that made me take a long hiatus; it was something much more troubling. But probably it's best just not to bring it up. About the smilies... I don't know about everyone else (except, obviously, some of the people in this thread), but I'm not too...

    Return from Hiatus

So.... ... what's happened here at this place during the 2 years that I stopped posting? Anything that's worth coming back for?

Yes, I know it's published by SpyMac, but it's still something very serious: http://www.spymac.com/comments.php?id=112_0_1_0_C

can you re build desktop on OSX

OS X doesn't really need desktop rebuilding in the OS 9 sense. But when you have problems with the Finder and file and application associations (rebuilding the desktop was the solution to this problem in OS 9), you can fix this by doing the following: 1) Open up your ~/Library/Preferences...

The true benefits of a mac

All Macs come with a bare bones editor in both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.. SimpleText or TextEdit, respectively. However, all iMacs, eMacs, and iBooks DO come with AppleWorks. Unfortunately, PowerMacs and PowerBooks don't, and you'll have to buy AppleWorks for $69 if you get one of these Macs. :\

    Ugly iMac ripoff introduced...

I was kind of surprised when people said this was an iMac ripoff. I wouldn't go so far as to say that. But I ALSO am surprised at how this company is touting it as an iMac competitor. Cheaper? Right.. as crazyapplerumors.com pointed out, it's as cheap as the base eMac. :rolleyes...

For all of you who switched to Hotmail after steaming over .Mac

When I pay $4.17 a month for .Mac, the 100 MB of storage is included in the fee. I regard .Mac as payment for the awesome iApps, so in my mind the online storage is free, yes. And when you pay $129 for Mac OS X, the applications come with the operating system and are included in the price...

For all of you who switched to Hotmail after steaming over .Mac

I'll gladly pay that extra $3.17 a month and get 100 MB of free disk space, and the ability NOT to have to set up and do my own e-mail server. Whatever floats your boat. Yeah, and I meant $4.17 a month... I always do that. :\

For all of you who switched to Hotmail after steaming over .Mac

http://news.com.com/2100-1023-946430.html I dunno about you, but I'd rather have .Mac for $4.17 a month than a crappy web e-mail interface that deletes your messages once they are 30 days old.

    Communicating between perl and FORTRAN.

Well, currently I am doing the web development on my Mac, so I was hoping there would be a way to test it. But the website will actually be housed on a VMS machine, so it will be perl on VMS to FORTRAN on VMS. Thanks for the heads up on that NetFTP module (I think I already installed it)...

How many people use Os X (1million 2 million ?...)

Actually, Apple hopes to HAVE 20% of all Mac users on Mac OS X by the end of the year. The quoted 2.5 million users was said to be 10% of Apple's user base, which would mean there are actually 25 million Mac users out there. And by the way, when Steve Jobs says "Mac OS X" users, he means...

    Jaguar vs. .mac

While I won't delve into the discussion about whether or not Apple is losing customers for charging so much, and about the online petitions, I would like to point one thing out: Apple's stock has never been one to follow normal rules. Jobs does a keynote at MacWorld, Apple's stock goes down...

    Where is my RAM going?

josh3dmaker: You said you were using Memory Usage Getter (see my sig). :) Just a tip: if you are using Memory Usage Getter 2.0.2, you might want to check the documentation included with the program. You can either press Command-? when running the program, or you can go to...

    Communicating between perl and FORTRAN.

Does anybody know of a way to transfer data between a perl program and a FORTRAN program? I have a FORTRAN subroutine that I want to call from a perl program, but I don't know exactly HOW to do that. The FORTRAN program is on a VMS machine (old, yes I know :p ). Any help would be...

    Firewire hard drive. Which one?

Why don't you just get an iPod? It can double as a MP3 music player AND as your FireWire hard drive. It is kind of expensive, but if you don't need too much capacity (up to 20 gigs), you might want to consider that option. It definitely is fast, quiet, and has a nice design. :D
