Open the case and you'll see a small microswitch on teh mainboard. unplug power, and hit that switch. DONT hold for more than half a second and DONT do it a second time. Try that, see how you go. If that doesn't help, remove your video card and clean the pins with a circut board safe cleaner...

Hey guys, struck a pretty tricky one here at work today, just wondering anybody's thoughts. imac 20" intel core duo, brand new out of teh box. Shuts down at random times during the initial setup screen. Will not turn back on for lengthy periods of time, then all of a sudden turns on and acts...

try booting from an external firewire drive... if you can i'd say your drive is either faulty or software is corrupt... if you can't its more likely to be procesor/logic board related.

can you see the hdd at all booted from the firewire drive? Or, when you boot into the option screen to select which drive can you see the original hard drive? Reseat the cables - easy as 123

you could try resetting PRAM apple/option/P/R three beeps usually means RAM related though - remove it alltogether - the board has inbuilt stuff and try that

from hearing that theres not much it could really be other than logic board. i would strip it down (maybe leave it to the cert tech or a different apple store) and remove hard drive, cd drive, basically power it up using just the logic board and external drive - if it still fails its ya board...

Try... when you restart the second time and hear the chime, you gotta be quick: hold apple/option/P/R down together until you hear it chime a second time - if you dont hear it a second time and it boots into OS you were too slow - try again. this will reset the P Ram of the machine...

Oh, and yeah your drive can still spin up even though it is faulty.

Re-install your system or boot from a firewire drive with an OS on it to rule out software fault first. If you boot off an external disk you should be able to use disk utility, tech tool pro, or diskwarrior to find/repair the disk. If it can't see it at all: *Pull the drive out and reseat...

After having updated to this version (stupid microsoft making me as it wont work anymore without the upgrade) i've noticed this version to be utter crap. It stalls, takes 20 minutes to tell me a contact has gone offline, the same time to tell me a message has not been sent, and it logs me out...
