    my first OSX crash

But I had the same problems since 10.1 at least... updates does not seem to make a difference. As for reformating, it did no good =/ I doubt it's a problem with the HD, since it works fine in OS 9. BTW, my HD is realy an ATA drive in a FW box... are yours true FW HD?

    my first OSX crash

Have you tried phoning Apple or LaCie? There is no info in the knowledge database on such a problem... strange and annoying :(

    my first OSX crash

I'm pretty sure it's not a lacy. To octane: I always crash, even if Classic is not launched To Powermaster: if you have the same problem as me, reformatting is no use. I tried HFS, HFS+,UFS,FAT32, all in vain. Bah.

    my first OSX crash

The only thing which will crash OSX is large file transfert (a few GB) to my FW HD, which works fine in OS 9. I have never been able to find any article about the problem anywhere... good luck to you. Hopefully it will be solved in 10.2, but I doubt it. BTW, what chipset does your firewire HD...

    Encoding DVDs in MPEG4

But it should be possible to find an app that does... as for the MPEG4/DivX relationship, I belive Divx is a bettered version of an old MPEG4 codec, which gives it better quality than the old MPEG4; however, QT is supposed to include enhanced MPEG4 codecs with a better quality than the old one...

    Encoding DVDs in MPEG4

Eh, do you mean they only decode MPEG2? That's not realy the problem, since QT6 will read MPEG4 files... so if it is possible to encode a DVD in MPEG4, it should be possible to then read it using QT6. The hard part is encoding it. And I'll like to know how it fares compared to DIVX encoding...

    Encoding DVDs in MPEG4

Does QT6 allow you to do that? If it does, how does it compare to Divx 4/5 in terms of file size/qualtiy ratio and encoding/decoding power needed? I've got loads of DVDs for my TV, but at university I havnt got one (and no DVD drive on my mac either), so I need to put all this in Divx/MPEG4...

    Silk, the newest Unsanity miracle

True, insanity has probably been working on it for some time. Still, it should be included in the update! I can't see why Apple didnt do it...

    10.1.5 and oxford-based FW HD

Havnt been able to test 10.1.5 yet, so I'm wondering... does it solves the problems with OS X freezing when transfering big files on external FW HD? (especialy thosed based on the Oxford chipset). I still have them in 10.1.4, and having to restart under OS 9 to make backup to my external drive...

    Silk, the newest Unsanity miracle

Can anyone come with a convincing explanation of why we need Silk at all? Surely if a freeware creator (admitedly very gifted) managed to get that hack running in like a day after the release of 10.1.5, Apple could have integrated it from the start??

Does Jaguar add a "Replace all" button?

Right now, when copying files to a folder where they already exist, you have to click on "replace" for every file... it's pretty annoying. Can one of your Jaguar user tell me if they added a "replace all" button? It sound like nothing, but everytime a PC user see me clicking a dozen time on...

    Quartz Extreme

I have an iMac G3 with an ATI 128 (16 mb), and I'll realy like to be able to run QE... though it seems I'm out, since it's not a Radeon. BTW, does it tell you anywhere if you are running QE or not, or do you just figure it out by the speed? Laslty, since you have Jaguard, did they add a...

Connecting a PC (WXP) to a software base station?

However, it might break file sharing... In any case, that's a minor nuisance. Oh, and I heard most PC cards do not support Apple's airport encryption, requirering one to disable it and leave the network open... is that true?

Connecting a PC (WXP) to a software base station?

chenli: ok thanks, that's what I wanted to do ;-) You are right, I plan to use an iMac running OSX as the base station. To bad about that microwave though... it's nearly in the line connecting the iMac to the *futur* other comp. OK, now I only have to see if my father wants a PC or if I can...

Connecting a PC (WXP) to a software base station?

I know connecting a PC to a Base Station works, but what about connecting it to an OSX box with an airport card? While we are at it, I'll also like some feedback from people with an Airport network... my network will have to cross three walls and a floor, is that a problem? And is anything...

Need beta-testers for new OSX freeware

It's a program made to browse huge pictures with without incredible amount of RAM; NASA's "Blue Marble" pictures of Earth are available to test it. You can get it http://kstudio.fr.st/ PPC and Windows versions are also available, though the Carbon version works the best by quite a lot...

DV camera not recognised by OS X

I tried importing videos from a video camera in iMovie; it works great in OS9, but not at all in OSX (stays on "camera disconected"). In OS9, Apple System Profiler recognise it as a DV camera; in OSX, the OS knows there is something connected, but doesnt know what it is. Configuration...

    Permissions in OS9

I want a way to leave my computer to someone, give him admin privileges, but prevent him from having access to my files. My problem is, how do I stop him from simply rebooting in OS9 (which anyway he should be able to do, if only to play UT) and accessing my files from there? TIA, Kinniken
