Not if you know how to load them fast. for OpenOffice, just disable the Java in OpenOffice option, that will not use the Java to make it run. OO.o can run without Java, but there is some feature that require for java to run. my OO.o on my Window Xp can render my .doc file without a problem...

not sure if it going to help but i found this forum talking about the hard drive, similar you have. http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread23929.html look like it could be the logicboard or the hard drive must be failing. i would suggest you call Apple about this

I have the same problem with my iChat, usually when my MBP goes to sleep mode, it just disconnect the internet. I know Windows do this too. (MBP is my first apple product) So im sure there is no way to maintain the internet connection while the system is in sleep mode
