    virtual consoles?

It's been a long time since I set one up. The notes I had (and the process I followed) were for a RedHat type system (RH, Mandrake, etc.) but I'll see if I can dig them up. I did have it working on my machine, though. I have a buddy at work that also helped me do it. I'll ask him tomorrow...

    virtual consoles?

Not virtual desktops and not just terminal windows. Virtual consoles/terminals. For example, in Slackware (my fav. Linux distro) I can ALT-F1...ALT-Fx (where ALT-F7 is reserved for X) and get an entirely new text login screen (much like how things look in single-user mode on OS X). I can...

I had exactly the same problem and someone suggested a little app from Apple that fixes all the permissions for system files. I can't remember the name right now. It worked great! I think it was called RepairPermissions or something like that... Does anyone remember the name of the app...

    three fstabs? which is which?

So does OS X use fstab in ADDITION to whatever process it normally uses to determine what drives to mount where? That is, can I create an fstab with only one entry--for the drive I wish to mount in a spot other than /Volumes--or does it ONLY use fstab if it exists? Also, I wonder if there is...

    three fstabs? which is which?

I'm used to editing /etc/fstab from my experience in Linux in order to mount different partitions at different mount points, but when I went into /etc on my Mac I was totally confused...why are there THREE /etc/fstab files? I found fstab.hd, fstab.rd, and fstab.sd. Which one controls the...

Hi, I've removed all my Darwin based software installed with FINK and then reinstalled FINK (that is, sudo rm -rf /sw and all the X11 stuff then reinstalled all of FINK with the FINK installer). Since reinstalling FINK I've run fink scanpackes and sudo dselect and when I do an update I...

    FINK vs. compiling from scratch

I've read the documentation about compiling apps from scratch on the FINK website and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck compiling many apps themselves (instead of using FINK packages or FINK unstable packages)? On my slackware box I ALWAYS compiled everything myself, but it seems...
