I have just done this myself a few months ago on my iMac G4. No problems for me. Just check system requirements and make sure you backup before installing. You'll also need to run Software update a few times afterwards. ( install disk was on a DVD format )

Do you have any other OS cd's at all to boot from? If not, try hooking up to your other Mac. You need access to the drive to see if the system folder is gone and for testing. If the system folder is at least there, you can use disk utility and try to repair it. You have to start somewhere... :)

First thing that comes to mind, with what you describe, it could be the logic board. It would explain why zapping pram sometimes works and the screen. It's possible it could be affecting the SuperDrive as well. Are there any firmware updates you can try?

Doesn't seem to be for AHT. It does sound like the logic board. Have you tried to zap the PRAM? And also, see if there are any firmware updates you can do.

There is no download for the update. You can go thru the Apple store or another authorized Apple dealer. You might have some luck on Ebay as well. Just check the spec requirements for your system. Also, adding more ram could help for speed.

Have you tried the Apple hardware test cd? The one I have is separate from the install disk, but from other members posts I believe it's on the install disk for the new OS's.

Have you tried the rebuild command from the mail menu under Mailbox? Also, check your mail preferences-accounts-advanced to see the settings you have for sent mail. Hope this helps...
