    Migrating to OS X +

Brief Overview: I am (planning on, at least) upgrading my mom's clamshell iBook (300 MHz G3, ca. 1999) to OS X. In order to better support OS X, I'm also planning on replacing the stock 3GB HDD with a 10GB HDD, and adding the max extra 256 MB RAM. I'm already running into difficulties, so...

    Need: Long-Range Airport

I'm replying to the last three posts here... blue&whiteman: Your concern for hijacking is noted. I do live in a very rural /small town area, and the chances for one of my neighbors to have wireless access and be devious enough to try just that sort of a trick is not too high, but precautions...

    Need: Long-Range Airport

Ok, fellas... Let's see if I can distill the advice: 1) Get DSL at my work office. (Make sure it just plain works.) 2) Get an Airport base station and Airport card for my iBook (my work computer). (Get familiar with wireless in a sure-fire location.) 3) Fool around with trying to beam...

    Need: Long-Range Airport

Thanks, fellas, for all your help. It seems from some of your replies that I need to give some more background information. That may or may not change your advice, but here goes: I am a Christian pastor in rural Nebraska. My work office (iBook) is in the church (of course ; ), and my home...

    Need: Long-Range Airport

What I want is an Airport network that will reach ~100 yards -- through several brick walls and a small parking lot, from one building to the next. Background: I want to run my home computer (PowerMac) and my office computer (iBook) through the same DSL connection to save money and allow me...

    Disconnect Script Failed...

Thanks for responding, ora! Sorry for not mentioning my OS more precisely; yes, it's 10.2.8. I'll try your trick about pulling the modem cable (i.e., the telephone cord) from the iBook until I get an error message or something.

    Disconnect Script Failed...

One other item: The disconnection problem is always on my iBook. The PowerMac is mainly my wife's machine, but she never reports to me the same problem.

    Disconnect Script Failed...

Here's a brief outline of my problem: While surfing the internet, checking/responding to email, etc., my Internet Connect menulet will randomly display the horizontal scrolling "Disconnecting... Disconnecting..." script - over and over and over and over. It never ends! And it never really...

    kernel panic...lost MS Excel file

I have two questions in one here. 1) I want to gain access to a MS Excel document that won't open. What do I mean? My 10.2.6 iBook crashed a couple of days ago. The only damage became apparent a day or so later when I tried to open one particular Excel workbook. I get a very brief (<1...

Bypassing firewalls (my own, that is)

Yes, that is correct; Apple uses an afp address (at least that's what I see).

Bypassing firewalls (my own, that is)

Oh, by the way, here's another network error I'm getting. When I try to connect-to-server between my iB and PM, I get mixed results. Specifically, I can connect from the PM to the iB no problemo, but when I try the reverse, I get an "Error = -36" message. Is this possibly related?

Bypassing firewalls (my own, that is)

I think I answered this in my original post, mostly. When I click on the Firewall tab (by the way, it's in Sys Pref>Sharing, not >Network : ), I get the "OS X Firewall Unavailable; other firewall software running on your computer. You must shut down that software first" (something like that)...

Bypassing firewalls (my own, that is)

ksv, That seems like too simple of an answer because I have (what seems to be) the exact same setup on my iBook (ContentBarrier the same, OS X settings the same), but do not have the same problems. Again: I can do automatic software updates on my iBook (including ContentBarrier), but not on...

Bypassing firewalls (my own, that is)

Here's my situation: I frequently want to access updates to my software over the web (e.g., Norton AntiVirus, Intego ContentBarrier, etc.), but I can't. Well, I can and I can't. Specifically, I have an iBook and a PowerMac. My iBook does this no problem. It's my PowerMac that gives me...

Is installing a Yamaha INTERNAL CD-RW possible?

I know that Yamaha is getting out of the disc burning business. I actually saw this as a plus because... a) They're more likely to discount the burners they do have, sooner or later. (And is $130 for one of their internals a good price? I'm not comparing them to some of the bargain peecee...

Is installing a Yamaha INTERNAL CD-RW possible?

Reply to ksv: What attracts me to this particular Yamaha is that it has that uber-cool T@2 (burns designs on the unused half of the CD) technology and comes bundled with lots of software (Photoshop LE, etc.). The external FireWire version is retailing for about $250, but the internal version...

Is installing a Yamaha INTERNAL CD-RW possible?

Yes...After I posted my original thread, above, I did come across xlr8yourmac and ran a search for "PowerMac" and "CD". Most of the posts there (this is the URL I used; I hope it links you directly to it: http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/action.lasso?-search ) back up what you, Rhino_G3...

Is installing a Yamaha INTERNAL CD-RW possible?

I have the PowerMac setup as you will see below in my signature. I am interested in purchasing and installing this Yamaha internal CD-RW device: http://yamahashoponline.com/product.asp?sku=2269599 My question is that I thought I'd heard somewhere that you're NOT supposed to take out the...

moving my itunes files to another location

bigbadbill, you rock! I tried your first suggestion, and it worked beautifully. Just to make it clear for the "listening audience" out there - I selected "Library" in the iTunes "Source" window. Then I typed Command-A (for select all), then Command-Delete. Since I had already copied my MP3s...

moving my itunes files to another location

Problem: My default OS X volume, "OS X System" is only 10GB...and my iTunes files are gobbling up nearly 7GB of that and growing. What I want to do: I want to move the MP3 files to another volume with 55GB free, "65GB Workspace". What I have done: I found this thread in iTunes help...
