update - everything is now working. In fact it probably always was. It now appears that it waits about 2 minutes between the completion of the playlist checking and the commencement of the burning, whereas in the past it was instantaneous. Strange, but a bit of patience get the desired result...

Well, it burns perfectly well from Finder - so I guess that rules out the cable...? Would this suggest a problem with Itunes? how can I diagnose this? The responses so far have been very helpful, thanks you.

Yes it is aluminum and glass. So is it possible that the cable was damaged during the hardware swap? And would that affect burning but not playing? Would rather avoid dismantling again. Any possible diagnostic I could do that would establish this reason for certain?
