DVD Burner problem with Imac

Hello, new here - hope someone can help.

The DVD burner on my Imac broke; it would not eject discs, this was a hardware not a software or control problem. I have now installed a new drive that plays DVDs no problem but when I try to burn a disc from Itunes the programme crashes - i.e. just hangs on a beach ball and I need to force quit, index says that Itunes is not responding.

Any ideas to regain this functionality appreciated.

If it is an aluminum/glass model iMac, I'd suspect it is the optical ribbon cable. I've had to replace a good amount of those over the years.

Yes it is aluminum and glass. So is it possible that the cable was damaged during the hardware swap? And would that affect burning but not playing? Would rather avoid dismantling again. Any possible diagnostic I could do that would establish this reason for certain?

Yes, try replacing the cable.
It's a common enough failure, but the only way to tell if it's a good fix, is to try it.

One question:
Can you burn a CD through the Finder, or is the burning problem only in iTunes?

Well, it burns perfectly well from Finder - so I guess that rules out the cable...? Would this suggest a problem with Itunes? how can I diagnose this?

The responses so far have been very helpful, thanks you.

I tried resetting the PRAM as suggested but still the same. Thanks for the idea though.

When I choose to burn a playlist it asks for a disc, I put this in and then it checks the playlist. Once this is done the progress box just goes blank and any click will initiate a beach ball.

Anybody else got any suggestions?

Open /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler (or hold down the 'option' key while clicking on the top menu  symbol and select System Profiler. In that program select "Disk Burning" and see if OS X sees that drive that you installed.

update - everything is now working. In fact it probably always was. It now appears that it waits about 2 minutes between the completion of the playlist checking and the commencement of the burning, whereas in the past it was instantaneous. Strange, but a bit of patience get the desired result.

Anyway, thanks to all those who made suggestions. Much appreciated.
