    forcing duplex mode

Hello, I have a G4 (pci graphics) and it doesn't get along with routers or hubs well. It has a bug with auto-negotiating and the such so i have to manually set it to 10 base t at half-duplex so the router will communicate with it. Now you might say hey, that is an easy problem to solve, but so...

Stupid question about *nix apps compatibility

I think it is time apple releases their AirPort card info...It isn't like nobody has the technology as it is. Justin

    duplex, router, g4...ugh!

I've tried to enable full-duplex on my Yikes G4 (pci graphics) many many ways in OSX. I've edited the /System/Library/StartupItems/Network/Network file to have the 'en0 media 100basetx mediaopt full-duplex' and then had that same thing in /etc/iftab and other things. I've tried it from the...

    Xemacs

Maybe you should recompile it, except whenever you do the configure setup, see if their is a flag for Eiffel? I don't know much about eiffel, so maybe you have to configure eiffel or something, but just run a ./configure --help if you decide that you want to try and recompile. Justin

    Newbie question

That is an easy problem, you have to start XWindows, then you can open a terminal and type in gimp or just run the gimp command. BTW, did you install this from source or get a binary? Justin

    Fink, Xdarwin, Now what?

If you go to SF most of the time their won't be Darwin Binaries that the site hosts...So all you have to do is compile the project. Most of the time it is pretty easy, but with Darwin their are problems with things like you have seen. If you need help just ask people because their are a lot of...

    AIM Command Line Client

Go to freshmeat.net and search for AIM. The info about whatever pops up will tell you if it is for the CLI or it needs more. ntaim is one that i have used and liked. Justin

XDarwin and xdm on Mandrake 8?

Kilowatt: Why do you just post saying you will post later...I'm just doing the same kinda thing you are doing right now, but you are just trying to get popular or feel good about yourself. Only post if you actually know what is going on and you can actually help...Sorry to be a dick but it is...

    "su" on MacOSx terminal

There is no reason to enable root if you are just an ordinary user. Most all of the people that get their computer screwed up because of the CLI is because they were stupid enough to enable root and think that they are super powerful or something like that.... sudo works fine for nearly...

any UNIX IRC clients that would work via OSX's command line?

http://www.bitchx.org - BitchX and http://www.blackened.com/blackened/ - Blackened are two good clients that I've used. I believe that bitchx is derived from ircII but i don't know because i haven't looked into that. Justin

Unix Newbie wanting to get better

Linux is both a little bit harder and a little bit faster than X in my opinion. I've been using linux for a while and I love it more than all the other Mac OS's and especcially over Winbloze. If you need any help with YDL I can give you help and forums are always a good place to go for help...

    strange tcsh behavior

I only think that because if you put a directory before another, that means it has a higher priority, so if you had two different versions of pine commands one in /usr/bin and one in /bin, then the one that was set in the path first (/bin is default) would have higher priority and be used...

    strange tcsh behavior

putting /sw/bin before anything else in your set path statement in your .cshrc or .tcshrc file should fix that problem. Justin

    Which X11?

That was my personal opinion about using Fink our just doing it yourself. I believe that their is no point in selling free software because their are enough people on Mac OS X and other *nix forums that could help compile something, so paying money for something free is just pointless. I also...

    Which X11?

Go with fink, you should never have to pay for anything in the *nix world unless you donate money to a person/company. I believe that MacGNU is another macosx.forked.net that just sell ports of free software (but i could be wrong). Anyways, fink is really great and it could take a little time...
