    Chess

The King and Rook don't exactly exchange places. The King moves two squares to its right or left (depending on whether you're castling King-side or Queen-side) and the Rook hops over to the other side of it. To castle in a chess program, move the King to its destination square. Since the...

    10.1.2 Released

Can someone please post the build number? I'm sure many of you know this, but for those who don't: go to the Apple menu, select "About This Mac", and click where it says "Version 10.1.2". It should change to say "Build XXXX". TIA, --Andy

    Mac Printer

Wow, you're way out there. I live in Astoria, which is much closer. If you want to make the trip, you can find directions at: http://www.jandr.com/Templates/Information/directions.tem Note that the City Hall station is (I believe) closed due to Sept. 11, but the other options are just as...

    Mac Printer

EricBrian, I also live in Queens, so maybe these store suggestions will help. (1) The nearest store to me with any geek goods is the Wiz, which is two blocks away. Not necessarily the best prices, but they do sell a few Macs and the service has been friendly every time I've needed to talk...

For Evil(M$) to triumph, do nothing

Here's what I sent to the DOJ when I learned of their email address. My letter wasn't so much about outrage at the bogusness of the proposed settlement as a suggestion that they use *all* the money to buy Apple hardware, and let Apple provide the software. I know, snowballs in hell come to...

    10.1 performance report

From the Help file, I found out that Command-Right and Command-Left are keyboard shortcuts to fast-forward and rewind. Oddly, these keyboard equivalents aren't shown in the "Controls" menu! I think it's really weird that there aren't buttons on the Controller window. Whose idea was that...

    VIM Syntax color help needed

Create a file in your home directory called ".vimrc". Enter the following 2 lines: set term=builtin_beos-ansi syntax on Save the file and (re)start vim. I forget where I got this tip, but it works for me. --Andy

Where is the Terminal Login Script?

I had the same problem with .bashrc not getting picked up after I changed my Terminal preferences. When I renamed it to .bash_profile, it worked. This is weird, because .bashrc worked in 10.0.4, but at least there is a workaround for 10.1. --Andy

command args missing in 'ps' output

I've found the output of 'ps' does not always contain all the command-line arguments that were passed to a given process. Specifically, if any of the arguments has the form "-xxx=yyy", that argument and all arguments that follow it are missing from the 'ps' output. The missing information...
