I have to transfer files from my pc to my powerbook, but OSX seems to be trimming all my long file names, which is not good... Anyway to turn this 'feature' off?

I have the original OS X (1.0), and the 10.1 upgrade cd. Will Jaguar be able to patch a fresh install of OS X 1.0 to 1.2 w/o the 10.1 upgrade cd in between? Didn't really find an answer with search.
