Sound As Instrument In Garageband '04

I'm trying to figure out how to use a sound file as an instrument in GarageBand, and I'm not having much luck. Is this ever possible? If so, how? i.e., I want to be able to play a sound file at different pitches using the keyboard. I'm using the iLife '04 version of GarageBand. Thanks, Ryan

    The Subnotebook

My perfect "subnotebook" would be like the PADD's on Star Trek. Make it an all-in-one device; minimal moving parts. No flip-open screen. Just a tablet. Make the screen touch-sensitive, and create a program like Key Caps that allows the user to type directly on the screen, or write notes to text...

iWork Pages not generating drop shadows in PDFs

Hmm... is the any way to force Printer Utility to add extra printers to the list, ones like the LaserPrinters that would support EPS output?

how can you test wireless signal strength?

I would recommend AP Grapher for testing signal strength. It graphs the wireless signal strength over a period of time. http://macupdate.com/ap+grapher

    Keynote 2

I think the transition performance depends more on your video card than the computer itself, since Keynote unloads a lot of that processing on to the card via OpenGL. I'm running Keynote 2 on an 800mhz G4 PowerMac with a 32mb Radeon 9600 card and a 32mb Rage128 card for a second display. The...

iWork Pages not generating drop shadows in PDFs

I just finished a yearbook job using Pages for the first time. Loved it -- a huge improvement over AppleWorks. We just got the proof back from the printer today, and for the most part, things were fine. However, all of the drop shadows on the text and images were missing. Before I burned the...

IE Win and JPG colors - WTF?

Make sure you don't have ColorSync turned on in IE. It's in the preference somewhere... in the appearance, display, or something like that. Supposedly, it'll make all the colors show up like they would on a PC, but it generally just makes everything darker. It's a feature, not a bug. *shrugs*

    GoLive or Dreamweaver?

If you're new to web design, I'd recommend starting with Nvu (from Mozilla) and then start looking at DreamWeaver/GoLive once you have a better idea of what you're doing. I've used Nvu for years, and I always recommend it to newbies, because of it's power and ease of use, and the fact that it is...

Energy Saver - Scheduled startup not saved

It sounds like your PRAM battery is dead. I just had that exact same issue with a PMG4 I'm working with. Replaced the battery and everything was fine. That information is stored on the motherboard in what is called the PRAM, or Parameter RAM, not in the system files. However, the PRAM does...

    Keynote 2

VLC Media Player, or RealPlayer. Both support full-screen QuickTime on primary or secondary screens. VLC can be configured to default to playing full-screen on the secondary screen.

    Keynote 2

I've been using Keynote for the past couple of weeks, and I've fallen in love with it. It's certainly more simplified than PowerPoint, but I consider this a strength, not a weakness. PowerPoint's design layout is more open-ended, allowing you more design and animation options, but this...
