Sound As Instrument In Garageband '04

I'm trying to figure out how to use a sound file as an instrument in GarageBand, and I'm not having much luck. Is this ever possible? If so, how? i.e., I want to be able to play a sound file at different pitches using the keyboard.

I'm using the iLife '04 version of GarageBand.

I haven't tried it. From the demo I saw, it worked well.
