Activity Monitor showed "HP Communications" which I quit, but Epson Scan still refused to start. Printer didn't work after that either :-) I will do a restart and hopefully it comes back.

Some luck, some not. Some head scratching. Booted into separate drive with bare bones Tiger installation (test drive) and installed Epson Scan. Installation went okay, and plugged scanner in and turned it on. Epson Scan launched and WORKED! Note, that the HP printer drivers were NOT installed...
