epson perfection 4490 photo scanner

I have recently purchased the above scanner but after many hours including emails to epson and a prolonged phone session with epson Canada with multiple clean reinstallations with the current driver from the website am unable to open epson scan in applications. The icon momentarily appears in the dock then disappears. The scanner usb port seems ok in the system profile. Epson says the problem is likely my mac , perhaps a "corupt preference"? I am unable access apple for help. The store I purchased from is not helpful;I will likely return the scanner if I don't get it working soon.
I have a G5 imac less than one year old and am running OS 10.3.9 . I have no other epson devices but do have a hp laserjet 1200 printer( with a scanning attachment which I've never used). I've tried to delete as many of the hp files as I can find.
My technical level? Higher than it was 6 months ago but still rather basic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Just wondering if you have had any luck with your 4490 scanner? I just bought and installed one yesterday (Jan 14 2006) and it seems I have the same problems, although there seems to be a conflict with my HP 3015 all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machine. Epson Scan won't launch, and the Scan Assistant brings up a list of scanners that feature only the HP, no sign of the Epson. Even tried Vuescan, left over from my old scsi hp scanner, but no luck. Running 10.3.9 same as you, although I am thinking of trying to run tiger on a separate partition and seeing if it can work. Will post more if I have any luck.
 
Some luck, some not. Some head scratching.

Booted into separate drive with bare bones Tiger installation (test drive) and installed Epson Scan. Installation went okay, and plugged scanner in and turned it on. Epson Scan launched and WORKED! Note, that the HP printer drivers were NOT installed on this drive, although the Apple installation HP drivers were, but the printer wasn't working properly. Was it working previously? I don't recall...

Tried boot into another separate drive of 10.3.9, again bare bones and no HP printer drives (except from Apple installation). Again, installed Epson Scan, reattached scanner and it WORKED! And, I could print too! Wow!

No luck on my main driver though.

Out of curiousity, I downloaded the newest version of Vuescan (www.hamrick.com) and tried it (my version is older) and it identified the Epson scanner and worked. An option, but a $50US one :-(

Had emailed Epson tech support and got the basic uninstall the Epson Scan and then reinstall. Did it and no change - still no scanner and Epson Scan won't launch.
 
Look in the Activity Monitor (Utility folder). See if any HP process is running. If so, quit and try Epson scanner.
 
Activity Monitor showed "HP Communications" which I quit, but Epson Scan still refused to start. Printer didn't work after that either :)

I will do a restart and hopefully it comes back.
