I have the same problem with my powerbook (bronz firewire). I noticed that if I dont put it to sleep eventually it will show fully charged. I never use that anyways, I just push the button on the battery to get a charge state.

I had the same problem (-5000)...etc I guess a while back I installed DAVE on OS-X and even after uninstalling it there were still files in the OS. If you go to DAVE's website you can get a list of where all the files are located, I had to boot into 9 to remove everything. Now all works well...

This is great for Schools and companies running macs! $499 for unlimited licence!! Not really for "personal use" but thats what timbuktoo is for. Also VNC (free!!)works great for personal use.
