10.1.5 - huge problem

Rusher of Din
A problem that I have had on and off since 10.1 has come up again in 10.1.5, but unfixable. Not even Apple could figure it out, but it almost disappeared as time and builds went by. In 10.1.5 it is back with a vengeance. All resolutions except for 800x600 are greyed out, and the Display Profile is "Unknown Display". When the proper resolutions are active, it will say the CPD-whatever, which is my 19" Trinitron monitor. Interestingly enough, there are at least two posts at the Apple Discussions site, both from people with G4 867's, same as mine, with the GeForce2 MX, with the SAME problem! What the hell is going on here? This is unbearable. Unlike those times before, unchecking the recommended resolutions did allow me to set a much higher one, but the screen is not the same size as before with the same resolution, plus changing them leave some window remnants on the screen, typical of bad video drivers. Ack.

Your problem is very similar to mine.... I lost most of the resolution options and refresh rates with my 32MB Radeon AGP and Viewsonic 19" monitor as well. Although I am not limited to just one resolution, I am limited to a much shorter list, with no refresh rates over 85hz.

I prviously ran this monitor 99.9% of the time at 1024x768 at 100hz - now it's at 85hz and has noticeable flicker and makes my eyes more tired (I probably should get more sleep anyway...).

Lot's of people are reporting similar problems, but as of yet, no fixes.

I did get my resolutions back by turning off the monitor prior to booting the system, turning it on only after the boot process is complete....but this is a pain, and shouldn't be necessary.

I'm glad to hear this, in the sense that there should be an update for this soon, if Apple doesn't want to look like complete idiots. The turning off the monitor during boot didn't do anything. Nothing that used to work will work now. And in the Display Profile box for the Display System Pref, it says Unknown Display.

Turn the monitor off before you boot the computer. The machine autosenses the monitor right off the bat, so the monitor needs to be off from the very beginning of the boot.

After the boot is 100% complete, then turn on the monitor. This should work....

That's what I did. I tried it a few times, shutting the monitor off as it was going down for the reboot. Then I tried turning it off completely, as well as the monitor, then turning on the computer and the monitor only after I knew it was booted. No dice.

I had a similar problem with my 32MB Radeon AGP and my 19" NEC MultiSync FP950. Everything but 800x600 was greyed out; though, I could select them if I disabled "Show modes recommended by display."

It was like this for a least a week and several reboots. One day, though, I rebooted and it all mysteriously returned back to normal.

Sorry I can't be of any more help. At least you'll realize you're not alone, though.

starfleetX: This is pre-10.1.5, right? I have a feeling that this particular issue, though I did have yours with earlier builds, is different.

I had a problem like this as well. When I updated to 10.1.5, I lost the 1280x960 resolution and everything above 1280x1024. The solution for me was to copy the folder "IOKit.framework" from /System/Library/Frameworks/ of a 10.1.4 installation to the same location in 10.1.5 (replacing the newer version). I have no idea why this works. Maybe someone else can explain why or offer a better fix than copying files from an older version of the os.

BTW, I tried copying the folder in the terminal, but that didn't work for me. I had to boot into os 9 and copy it.
