10.1 update not taking due to lack of priv.

I am trying to install a 10.1 update and it stops most of the way through and says "operation not permitted", them the installation reports an error and the only option is to reset (at which point osx was lost completely --- not lost, just not functional). The installation log says nothing of interest.

please assist (I got this error on an ibook 300 92mb 3gig and an iMac 500 680mb 30gig)

I'm assuming you already have 10.0.x installed on your computer(s). (you never know... ;) )

If the same error is happening on two different computers, it sounds like your installer is corrupted or something. Is it the real Updater CD that you got from an Apple Retailer?
