UPDATE:
I got the replacement battery yesterday and it cured the problem. It came with 8 percent charge. When charging it for the first time it showed the same behavior than the previous one, i.e. charging up to 70 percent and then suddenly jumping to 100 percent. However, after that it works as expected, i.e. draining slowly down to 10 percent or so, then giving a warning message as it should be, and afterwards doing a linear charge until 100 percent.

I did a PMU reset before mounting the new battery, but to be honest I don't know if this makes any difference.
However, before doing future OS updates I will definitely unmount the battery...
