10.2.8 freezes

My buddy just installed the 10.2.8 update via Software Update on his 233Mhz iMac and now it consistently freezes, especially in iPhoto. Everything ran fine before the update. I don't recall how much memory he has installed but I'm sure he has maxed out the machine.

I suggested unplugging all peripherals to see if it makes a difference, and also trying the COMBO updater in case the regular updater missed something (I think he had been running 10.2.5).

Any other ideas?

You can always try to repair permissions (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> First Aid -> Repair Permissions) and see if it solves the problem.

Indeed, a fresh install and then the combo updater should definitely help.

Good luck! :)

My buddy says that Repair Permissions freezes after 10 seconds. I had him run Norton Disk DOctor which reported major directory errors and other problems. Fixing them didn't help. TechTool also found some minor problems but fixing them didn't help either.

He is going to try installing the COMBO updater and if that doesn't fix things it's time for a flatten and reload.

This is an issue known by Apple and reported on MacFixit - the fix is posted there and quoted here:

The solutions vary depending on the model of your computer. For the PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard), installing the newer release (build 6R73) of the OS X 10.2.8 Update should fix the problem. If you have any other affected model, Apple recommends the following steps:

1. Launch Terminal.
2. Type sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/AppleNDRV/ATIDriver.bundle /Users/Shared/ (all one line, with spaces after sudo, mv, and bundle); press return. You'll be asked to provide your admin-level account password.
3. Type sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions (all one line, with spaces after sudo and touch); press return.
4. Restart your computer.

After restarting, the problem should no longer occur. (You can delete the ATIDriver.bundle file that was moved to /Users/Shared at your convenience.)

I checked out your link to MacFixit - it says the problem only applied if there was 192+MB of RAM, my buddy has 160 MB. I applied the fix anyway and IT WORKED!!! Well, mostly - Safari consistently crashes on launch, even after a reinstall, but I.E. and Camino work OK. His consistent iPhoto crashes are also fixed. He is a happy camper for now.

Thanks for your assistance!!!
