10.2.8 hangs at login

I hope someone can help out here ... this is the first time in a while that my mac has baffled me.

A few days ago it froze (not even the spinning icon) while doing nothing of partiular interest. I figured this was because the hard disk was near full. I hit the restart button. The boot sequence was normal until just before the desktop appears. I logged in fine and that splash screen disappeared, but nothing replaced it -- the computer just sits there, without any audible disk activity, apparently trying to log me in for hours on end. Figuring that this was a disk space issue, I restarted in single-user mode with command-S and cleaned out ~/.Trash and some other files so that I now have close to 1G free. Restarted and same behavior. Thinking that I was now in trouble, I re-installed 10.2.8 from the CD. Ran the Repair Permissions and Disk Repair utilities, too. No change in behavior. I even tried removing ~/.cshrc, thinking that might be referencing a corrupt file or the like upon login. No dice and now I'm out of ideas.

If anyone has thoughts on how to fix/diagnose this login issue, I would be much obliged. Thanks in advance.

sounds like you tried everything that had to be done. I didn't get if the system freezes after the login or before. And did you repair the permissions as long as there was no more error reported? Running it once might not always help.

Hey, and welcome to the forum :)
