10.4.11 has blank blue-grey screen

Can't recall if iMac flatscreen running on 10.4.11 suddenly shut off or if the screen went blank blue-fading to grey.

It does the same thing on startup...I tried holding down the F9 key on startup, and saw the apple screen. It looked promising, but then reverted to the blank blue-grey again.

Mouse cursor is not showing up on screen, but obviously the keyboard is communicating.

Any suggestions? Besides running system software--I have no idea where the CD-roms are.

Thank You!

The screen of my Mac Book shows the same empty blue grey screen as Gyxie's description, and goes off and on at a short click.
Could you please tell me how to access to how to solve the problem. Can I read the answer given to Gyxie, if any.
This is my first time on this forum, I just registered, so I am not familiar with it yet. Thank you !

To both 'posters' the first step is to get access to and use the original restore or install disks because you need to run a hardware check. However, supposing you can get hold of the disks, and boot from Disk 1 by holding down the C key, but you still cannot get an image on the screen, then that suggests a video card failure.

Have either of you tried starting in Terminal mode ... http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417 ... to run the fsck check?

Thank you for the advice. I wan't have access to disk 1 before next week, so I have no result to post for the time being. I'll let you know when I return home.I am reassured it is not the hard disk...and the possible loss of data !Thanks again.
