10.4.4 and sleep problems

First of all, I have done a thorough search on sleep problems both here and elsewhere on the net. There is a real plague of such problems, particularly the one where sleep is aborted after a second or so. I found at least twenty reported causes, including bad monitor connector, powered USB hubs, modem, bad settings in energy saver, corrupted .plist files, bad ram, nvram problems, pram needing resetting, etc. I've tried each of them. My system responds to none of these.
Since the problem happened immediately after I installed 10.4.4, I'm wondering if that's the problem.

I'd like to reset the PMU, but I have a G4 QuickSilver model 733mhz, which has a unique circuit layout. There is no button anywhere on the board that I can find, certainly nothing near the battery. And apple.com doesn't provide a logic board layout that tells me where the button might be. I'm half persuaded that this model doesn't have a PMU reset switch.

Thank you for posting this problem as I believe my issue is similar with the exception that it did not immediately happen after installing 10.4.4. I am using a iMac G5 and was on 10.4.4. I purchased an HP ScanJet 4370 scanner and that's when I started experiencing the problem; coming out of Sleep mode the system froze and upon restart the flashing question mark or just gray screen would appear.

The scanner is always powered and uses a USB connection. When the iMac would come out of Sleep mode, the Dock would freeze and the system would follow. When I would restart, the hard disk could not be found. I tried starting holding the option key, and Command + S, and Shift, and zapping the PRAM. I also held down the Power Button for the long tone option. After restarting several times either using the original system CDs (not the Tiger CD) or Disk Warrior 3.0.3, I was by luck able to boot and run either Disk Utility or Disk Warrior depending on the boot CD I was using. Both utilities intermittently were able locate the hard disk; meaning just because I was able to boot didn't mean I could see the hard drive which meant restarting again.

I kept getting the error, "Invalid Leaf Record Count" (there are 3 where should be 348) until erasing my hard drive. I'm not getting the error now but I am still experiencing the crashing lost disk problem. Disk Warrior has been helpful in stabilizing the OS. I currently think either the HP ImageZone Software is bad or the scanner, being powered, is conflicting with the OS Energy Saver instructions. I don't know enough about the Energy Saver preferences or routine to fix the problem. I never had any problems before; its been the best computer I've had so this weird. The scanner works to quite well when my system isn't losing itself.

The Command + S did intermittently prove helpful getting the system to boot up again. Below is the instruction:

Try resetting a couple preference files by doing the following:
1. Shut down your computer.
2. Press the power button and immediately press and hold the Command and S keys to start up in Single-User mode.
3. When you see white text appear on the screen, let go of the keys.
4. At the prompt, type mount -uw /
5. Press Return.
6. Then type mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist preferences2.old
7. Press Return.
8. Type mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist preferences3.old
9. Press Return.
10. Type reboot
11. Press Return. Your Mac should start up normally.

I have a PBook hooked to a cine display and have had the sleep problems... I thought I had found a solution (forcing the screensaver to start, then closing the lid), but then found it had come back on in the middle of the night. Sometimes if I persit with the sleep command for 3 or 4 times it will eventually stay asleep. If I unplug everything attached it sleeps as it should... strange and somewhat annoying.

The same thing happened to me. First try unplugging all peripherals, except the obvious: keyboard, mouse, display, etc. If that doesn't work, (and it looks like you've tried that), take out ALL added PCI cards. This fixed my sleep problems, the USB card was causing the system to crash when I tried to wake it up, or it wouldn't go to sleep in the first place.
