10.6.2 hates ext HDs

hello! made the switch to 10.6.2 2 weeks ago and I'm having what seems to be a problem usually associated with iStats. but: I don't have iStats.
my problem: whenever I connect to an ext HD, my computer goes a bit nuts. the menu icons disappear and the system preferences get incredibly slow and wonky.
if I go to system prefs/screen saver and click on "random screensaver" the computer will crash.
this computer wonkiness can even continue after I eject the ext HDs -- once I was on battery power and the computer just shut off.
every time I restart, the problem is fixed.
and then it starts again by attaching an ext HD, which I do a lot.
I have plenty of memory on the internal HD. 345gb free --I installed a new internal HD and the new 10.6 with a clean install
I'm on a macbook pro 2.16 ghz
as far as spotlight indexing the ext HDs, if that's the problem, I'm not sure why. spotlight has had a week of being connected to the ext HDs and should've indexed them by now -- it's only 1tb of info...
