12 iBook Screen

I fell asleep watching a DVD on my 12" iBook. When I awoke, I found it playing the DVD audio but the display was blank white.

I did not drop or otherwise agitate the machine. I just fell asleep while it played a movie.

I closed the clamshell and it went to sleep as it should. I reopened it and it gave me the same blank white display. The screen backlight comes on as it should but there is no desktop. I shut it down, removed the battery and let it cool. I restarted, heard the startup sound and heard the drive spinning up but stiil saw no display.

Is this a common problem? Is there something simple and obvious that I am missing? I am about six months out of warranty and do not have Apple Care. I just ordered my free replacement battery so that my beloved computer doesn't spontaneously combust. I would hate to think that it is now looking for another way to commit suicide.

Thanks,
J

Jeff,

You are not alone with this problem. You can do a couple of things. First, call Apple and nicely but strongly appeal to them for a replacement.

Second, sign the petitions to get Apple to change their stand on this.

Although my iBook is a 1.2G model (which I did not see listed on the petition) I have signed the petition. I also spoke with Apple Customer Relations. The girl was very nice but would not assist me except for giving me the number of some local Apple repair companies. None of them could do it for any less than Apple. The lowest estimate that I have gotten is $500. The computer was $999 new. It seems that my only option now may be to bite the bullet, buy another computer and hope that Apple decides to extend the "Logic Board Replacement Program" to my machine.

By the way, you guys are great. You have been more helpful to me than anyone affiliated with Apple, the Apple Store or our local Apple repair offices. I have loved my iBook and will buy other Macs in the future. Macosx.com is a wonderful resource and the place I will go with any other questions in the future."

Things like this happen once in a while. I wouldn't sweat it unless it continually shows itself to be an issue. Optical drives do die, but replacing it wouldn't be too expensive. There's many places with excellent flat-rate repair server for Powerbooks.

What's the exact model of your computer? Apple has an extended warrenty out for some iBooks with this problem: see if you qualify. Your logic board is probably bad, but you may want to try booting from the install disk.
