2 Questions about network shares

My girlfriend and I have a music collection that we have built up, between our cd collections. I have a g5 powermac and she has an iBook. So because the folder is about 45 gigs it is not possible to have this on her ibook; so all the music is on my g5. I am wondering what the easiest way is to set this up so we both can use the library in iTunes.

Also, how do I go about mapping a drive that will continue to be there after I reboot.

One more thing, is there a way to redirect folders to other places? For example; I have all of my videos on a 250 gb external drive. I would like to be able to go to finder and click on the folder icon on the left for movies and it opens the movie folder on my external
 
MUSIC:
Just setup your G5 with the music, then share it in iTunes' Sharing preferences. Your GF will be able to access the songs then when plugged into your LAN. Both machines have to have the same version of iTunes for this to work.

Otherwise, just share the folder the music is in (Samba, Share Points, etc.) then in the iBook's iTunes>Preferences>Advanced change the location of the library to the location on the G5.

I do this at the office and it works fine. An old Beige G3 with 10.1.5 (our file server) holds the music library, the two 'client' computers have iTunes pointed to the appropriate folder there as described above. Both 'clients' are running Win2KPro and differing versions of iTunes than the server, everything works fine. Only did that so the songs show up as soon as iTunes opens, instead of having to click on the "shared folder" in the side bar as well as the differing versions of iTunes on each machine.

If you bought/buy anything off the store, then you'll need to make sure both computers are authorized in order to play the bought songs.


MOVIES:

Drag the Movies folder out of the sidebar in the finder, then drag the folder on the external drive to the sidebar. You could even copy the icon from the original movies folder and use it on the external drive and name it Music to make it seem transparent if you so wish.

Or you could use the terminal and an LN command, but it's more hassle than what's described above and won't work any better really.
 
For the iTunes issue, just enable sharing in the Preferences: from the "Sharing" tab at the top, make sure both "Look for shared music" and "Share my music" are on. For the G5, you can disregard or disable the setting for "Look for shared music" since it's the one doing the sharing, not looking. As long as the G5 is not asleep and has iTunes running, she should be able to launch iTunes and have the G5's playlists appear in her iTunes.

As for the remapping of the actual "Movies" folder, I think the best thing to do would to just drag the folder of the actual movies on the external into the sidebar where you want it so it's available there and be done. You can even cut 'n paste the icon via Get Info from the user's Movies folder to the folder on the external, then remove the old Movies sidebar icon by dragging it out, so the icon will look the same.
 
i forgot to mention that she has an ipod. So i dont see a way for her to be able to put music on her ipod by sharing the library, unless I am missing something
