2 very old mac os x problems i never posted about until now....

First problem. My hard drive icon does this. Very rare, but happened 2 or 3 times in the past year. I found nothing to fix it except for a reboot, but I don't need to reboot!!!!! (It's been like that for days now, lol.)

Second problem, when I took this screen capture the Finder crashed. So I started it again, fine. But then the dock doesn't work right! Dock hiding is on, but when dragging a file to the dock it will NOT pop up. I tried quitting the dock, no luck. Simply cannot drag files to the dock. This will go away randomly too, and I won't see this problem again for a while, but I' d like to know what causes it and how to fix it!!

I've had a similar problem but the black stripes were usually bigger or just one big one. A logout typically solves the problem for me.

As to your other problems, how fast is your machine? What are you running?
 
I'm on a TiBook 400 mhz (first rev!)

384 MB of memory

got like 13 apps open in the dock, 5 of them big ones. Maybe like 30 small weird processes i can see in ps -aux

This is a cosmetic issue that Apple is investigating. It cannot be resolved by troubleshooting. The issue may occur more often when the computer is using a lot of virtual memory. Restarting the computer or installing more memory (RAM) may prevent the issue from occurring as often, depending on how the computer is used.

Rats! I restarted my machine and I still have the screwed up hard drive icon!!! It's never done THAT before! Also, the dock would still not accept a dragged file onto it either, AFTER RESTART!! ARRRGHH!!

It's now like an hour after I restarted and the dock works again. See told you it was random and would go away.

But when am I gonna get my normal HD Icon back??????

I installed additional RAM like... a year ago now. Shouldn't be the problem!!!
 
I've had problems with my dock not unhiding but it's always with something I'm trying to unmount/eject. It works with files.

Anyone who runs Norton deserves to have all their files erased permanently. Norton is actually a corporate produced virus. Ed Spruiell will agree with me on this.

And Toast... nope. I tried switching my memory sticks around and the icon remains the same. But my stickies database got deleted!!!! :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:
 
You can pick whatever brand disk utility program you like. This is America, we still have choices...

You've obviosly got corrupt files, you might want to consider repairing them.

ok, it's not quite that bad, but i find that a poetic description worth hanging on to. it 's definitly software to be avoided like a virus.:D

solrac - i only get the problem with the dock after restarting. after i open the hd from the icon and then drag the item back to the dock, it always works. I don't know if that helps you but it is a simple, albeit annoying, fix for me.

sorry, i've never seen the lines, just other people's pics of them. it used to be thought that ie caused it, but that appears to be myth. no cure has been found to my knowledge.

anybody know different?
