Access Alternative

There are many. Filemaker Pro by Apple sudsidiary Filemaker, Inc. is the top DBMS on the Mac and second DBMS on Windows. 4th Dimension is a Mac-first cross-platform DBMS that is even more powerful than Filemaker Pro. OpenBase is an extremely powerful free DBMS which is automatically installed on your Mac when you install the Development Tools. MySQL is included with MacOS X Server. However, you have to use Virtual PC if you want that POS Microsoft Access.

Oracle, MySQL, & MaxDB also run under OS X.

What you choose really depends on what you're trying to accomplish, as well as your current skill set with DBs and the level of easiness you want in the product compared to its power and capability. How often you'll use it and the number of projects also is a factor.

Filemaker is nice if you're going to be making stand alone DBs and want cross-platform capability. That version isn't cheap though.

our office uses Filemaker Pro. we still use client versions across a few other computers. the user interface is great and it's easy to make small changes without getting the FM developer involved.
