Accidentally emptied trash. Need to restore files

I placed what I thought were old files into trash and emptied the trash.
But did not secure the trash.
Is it possible to get these files back?
Or even do something similar to a system restore , going back to an earlier time?
This is a e mac with osx 10.
Please forgive my lack of mac knowledge as I have up until now been a windows person.
Thanks in advance to anyone with ideas on this subject.
