Ad-hoc network

Hi all, I'm a noob here but found nothing that could help me when I did a search so if someone can please help me I'll be eternally grateful!

I've attempted to set up an adhoc wireless network in my student house using my old XP laptop connected direct to the cable modem via ethernet. The other PCs/XP machines in my house connect fine to the machine and its internet connection, but although my macbook see's the network there, it cant connect to the internet.

Any ideas why this is or how I can rectify this problem!?

Are you using a wireless encryption method? If so, what kind of security?

no encryption at all! ive turned it all off and it still wont have it

This is a very insecure network. You are better off scraping up money and getting a real wireless modem that use NAT (most third party router use NAT automatically). XP is not secure in any sense of the word and I bet it has been hacked/viruse bound already.

Most routers using the standard TCP/IP stack and not Microsoft's proprietary TCP/IP stack.
