Add a monitor to an iMac?

I have one of the first iMacs, now about four years old.

CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 700 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.3.5f1

My attached monitor is 14" and somehow defective. The screen images and fonts are hard to read, and the "lightness" has nothing to do with my Display settings. It looks like I have a plug-in for an extra monitor on the back of my circular base. I'm wondering if a Viewsonic 19" Flat Panel LCD Monitor will fit into that plug-in, and if I can expect more vivid images on my screen. Or would somone recommend another model flat screen? (Buying a new computer is out for the moment.)

Thanks.

THose have a mini VGA port, and you would just need a mini-to-regular VGA cable, Apple sells them, and you can add on a monitor. As far as the monitor being better, I have not sue dthat specific one so I can't give you any valuable info. I do know that I would rather have a bigger monitor though (19 as opposed to the 14)

Something else to consider - if you have any Apple Authorized repair centers, maybe go ask if they have a parts collection.

The service center I worked at had a LOT of old parts iMac G3s, iMac G4 Flat Panels, emacs, etc etc They'd charge a reasonable price for the part, and the labor to install it - thus allowing you to continue using your old computer.
