Have recently started using 10.5.5 on new machine. Found Character Palette OK, but cannot work out how to add characters to favorites. I must be overlooking something ???? Didn't have this problem before.

Well to get the Character Palette (with your Country flag) just open system Preferences->International pane, Input Menu tab and put check marks in Character Palette, Keyboard Viewer then scroll down and select you Country's flag. This will put the flag in the Finder menu bar. There you can always click on it and bring up either the Character Palette or Keyboard Viewer.

Now open Character Palette and find your favorite and highlight it. Then at the bottom of the pane select the gear icon to add it to your Favorites.

thanks - all of that is not a problem.
what i cannot figure out how to do is to put characters into favorites within the character palette. have tried drag and drop etc, but no success. Any ideas? would be very grateful for an answer.

Assign a keyboard shortcut (System Preferences->Keyboard & Mouse pane, Keyboard shortcuts tab. This way you can make a keyboard combination (and save it) pointing to the character item you want to use. This is the only way i can think of right now.
