Added iChat buddies don't show up on the buddy list

I am currently running iChat 1.0.1 and if I add a new person in iChat, they don't show up on the buddy list. Their address card shows up in Address Book and when I am messaged by the person it shows their name given when I first entered them in, but the buddy list does not show them as being online. Anyone ever have this problem?

Does it happen with a few or all of teh ichat buddies?
Sometimes the privacy settings can make that they don't allow others than either one by one selected people to show in their list and see their status, or only allow the people directly in hte iChat buddylist to see them.

Only new buddies with AIM. I don't IM often, just starting to use it for work mostly. I added a friend recently, same issue, then somehow it just worked. I'm looking into their settings. If I can't get it worked out, I'll get back with details. Thanks.

I have had the same problem. Add a new person, and they don't show up. What I have done, is quit the ichat program, and then restart it. The person shows up after you restart it.

Are you using the same version of iChat as these people? This thread is nearing 4 years old...

that would explain it
